GB sniff Road Worlds chance with Pogacar absence

Great Britain's cycling team has shown remarkable potential for the upcoming Road World Championships in Montreal, with many factors contributing to their strong chances of success. One notable aspect is the absence of Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar, who suffered injuries during the Vuelta a Espana in August. This absence has created an opportunity for Britain's rising stars to shine.

British cycling has experienced a golden period in recent years, with notable achievements from Team Sky, Mark Cavendish, and Lizzie Deignan. Deignan won the road race in 2015, while Cavendish triumphed in 2011. Collectively, British riders have claimed the elite road race title seven times, including victories by Tom Simpson (1965), Beryl Burton (1960 & 1967), Mandy Jones (1982), and Nicole Cooke (2008).

The 2023 Road World Championships will feature a new generation of British talent, with promising riders like Matthew Brennan and Zoe Backstedt poised to make a significant impact. Brennan, a 21-year-old from Visma Lease a Bike, set a record by winning five stages in his Grand Tour debut, showcasing his potential to lead the team to victory. Meanwhile, Backstedt claimed a second-place finish in Sunday's time trial at the Worlds, marking her first foray into elite competition.

The women's road race consists of an 180.4km course with eight laps around Montreal, while the men's race spans 273.2km with 12 circuits. Winning a road race at the World Championships often requires a well-timed breakaway, as individual riders can challenge the larger peloton. However, such an effort is risky, as breaking away often entails riding against the wind for extended periods.

Successful breakaways require not only physical endurance but also strategic planning and team support to eventually close the gap with the main group.
