Alabama AD Greg Byrne Talks CFP Expansion, Private Equity, Life After Saban

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne’s daily work involves managing the rapidly changing college athletics world, while also planning for the department’s future prosperity. Since assuming his role in 2017, Byrne has faced challenges such as rising costs, spending limits due to NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) rules, the House v.

NCAA class-action lawsuit, and the transfer portal. His responsibilities include finding new revenue streams, like private equity investments, and replacing legendary coach Nick Saban. Byrne discussed these topics with Front Office Sports and touched on several major issues in college athletics.

When asked about the most pressing issue for athletic directors, Byrne stated that there isn't a single pressing issue, but rather a multitude of concerns. These include finding a sustainable model as the market has changed, addressing ongoing litigation, and maintaining high standards for student-athletes' academic, athletic, social, and medical support. Furthermore, Byrne highlighted the need to reevaluate compensation structures for coaches and athletes.

Byrne mentioned conference governance as a topic of increasing discussion, particularly in light of court rulings striking down national rules. He explained that one potential solution is to develop conference-level rules that can be enforced and avoid unnecessary legal challenges.

As for the College Football Playoff expansion, Byrne felt that a 24-team playoff was likely to occur. However, he emphasized the importance of preserving the regular season's value and proposed that all teams should play a minimum of 10 Power Four games during the season to ensure fairness. Byrne also noted that while many fans may be surprised by the dedication and enthusiasm of young people in college athletics, they still desire a high level of coaching, guidance, and personal development.
