Fearn Raises $5.5M From Kindred and a16z Speedrun to Launch AI-Native Patent Law Firm

Fearn, an AI-native patent law firm, has raised $5.5 million in seed funding led by Kindred Ventures and a16z Speedrun. This startup aims to streamline the patent application process for inventors, allowing them to go from describing an invention to a review-ready application in as little as 24 minutes. The firm charges a fixed $9,000 for the full application, with its own fee at risk if the examiner denies the application. The funding round closed in June 2025, three months before the firm's official launch.

The patent process today is costly and time-consuming, with an average wait of 22.5 months for a first examiner decision. Law firm fees have also risen by about 7% in 2025, making the process even less affordable for startups with limited budgets and time constraints. Fearn's unique approach charges a lower fee for the same service, offering a refund guarantee if the examiner allows nothing.

The global patent services market is valued at $14 billion annually, with projections reaching $20 billion by 2035. Fearn's service targets early-stage companies that need to file patent applications quickly and affordably, addressing the inefficiencies in traditional patent law firms. By offering a refund guarantee, Fearn ensures that clients see the cost savings of their service, unlike conventional law firms that cannot guarantee results.
