Death toll from capsized ship in Indonesia rises to 20

The official death toll from a passenger ship that capsized in Indonesia's Java Sea has risen to 20, according to officials on Wednesday. This increase from the previous 10 fatalities comes as search and rescue efforts continue, with authorities anticipating more bodies may be found as the underwater search expands. The Virgo Transport 8 ferry, carrying 243 people including 30 crew members, capsized in bad weather on September 13 during a voyage from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan.

Eight bodies were recovered from inside the ship over the past three days, while two more washed ashore in Central Kalimantan province around 157 miles from the accident site. As of Wednesday, 115 people remain missing and 108 survivors have been accounted for. Wednesday's search will focus on retrieving more bodies from the ship's cabins, while divers have managed to break the windows but are unable to enter due to murky water and strong currents.

The search will then shift to the vehicles on the ferry, though this could pose risks to the diving team. Efforts to right the capsized ship continue, though as of Wednesday it remained in the same precarious position.
