CBS, Fox News, NPR and Dozens More News Media Groups File for Restraining Order to End Trump Press Ban

A coalition of esteemed news organizations, including CBS, Fox News, NPR, and numerous others, have joined forces to seek a restraining order aimed at lifting President Trump's ban on CNN, Politico, and MS NOW. Their motion argues that the ban infringes upon the fundamental right of the public to access accurate and independent information about their government.

In their brief, the organizations assert that no administration should be permitted to restrict a news outlet's access to the White House solely because they disagree with the outlet's reporting.

The list of signatories to the brief also includes media powerhouses such as the Associated Press, Reuters, the National Press Club, Dow Jones & Co., Pro Publica, Penguin Random House, and The New York Times company. The brief highlights that the restriction of these news organizations' access to the White House due to their perceived negative coverage constitutes a penalty based on the content of their reporting.

The signatories claim that such actions create a chilling effect, discouraging other outlets from publishing stories they fear might provoke similar sanctions.

President Trump imposed the ban on CNN, Politico, and MS NOW on Friday, with the restriction taking effect on Saturday. In response to the news organizations' request for a temporary restraining order, the Trump administration defended its decision on Tuesday, claiming that "access to the White House is a privilege, not a right." The administration argued that the ban was not retaliatory, asserting that it would have taken the same action even if the news organizations had not criticized the President.
