Anwar to meet 21 Chinese business leaders in Shanghai and Hangzhou as Malaysia courts fresh investment

On September 23, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to meet with 21 Chinese business leaders during his visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou. This roundtable business engagement aims to attract high-quality and impactful investments into Malaysia. Anwar will begin his agenda with a meeting of these industry captains as part of efforts to foster stronger economic ties between the two nations.

Later in the day, Anwar will attend the opening ceremony of the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 competition, a prestigious international showcase of technical and vocational skills. The 48th WorldSkills Competition, held from September 22 to 27, features 22 Malaysian participants competing in 21 skill categories under the "Road to Gold" initiative, which aims to secure Malaysia's first gold medal at the global competition.

The Prime Minister and his delegation will then travel by high-speed train to Hangzhou, China's largest city, for the second leg of their visit. Upon arrival, Anwar is scheduled to hold one-on-one business meetings with prominent companies such as AgiBot, Huawei, Alibaba Group, Geely, and ZTE Group. During his stay, Anwar will also attend a welcoming dinner hosted by Li Qiang, the Chinese Premier.

Anwar's visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou continues China's long-standing status as Malaysia's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade volume reaching US$113.82 billion (RM456.68 billion) for the period from January to August 2023. The Prime Minister arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday for a three-day working visit to the two Chinese cities.
