Anwar, Pendang MP settle defamation suit ahead of trial

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, has reached an amicable settlement in his defamation lawsuit against Pendang Member of Parliament, Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim. According to a joint statement released by both parties, they decided to end the dispute after weighing the costs of litigation against more pressing matters for the nation's welfare.

The settlement occurred just before a four-day trial scheduled for October. As part of the agreement, Awang Solahuddin agreed to withdraw his statements made around February 21, 2023, that formed the basis of the lawsuit. Anwar, on the other hand, agreed to drop the suit without specifying costs or leaving the door open for future legal action.

Both parties expressed gratitude to the judge and court staff for their professionalism, stating that all issues between them were fully and permanently resolved. They urged the public not to politicize the matter, as it could harm the country's harmony, unity, and stability. Anwar's legal team, represented by Datuk Sankara Nair, informed the court about the settlement and sought to withdraw the suit without an order regarding costs or the ability to file a new claim.

Awang Solahuddin's counsel, Yusfarizal Yusoff, confirmed the matter. The court, presided by Judge Roslan Mat Nor, accepted the agreement and vacated the trial dates.
