Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse. Then Shopify wired it into every store.

On September 8, Meta launched its personal agent, Muse, on Amazon.com. However, two weeks later, on September 22, Amazon began blocking Muse from browsing and purchasing on its platform. The block came after Amazon raised concerns about Muse's unauthorized access, as it did not disclose its identity and appeared to capture customer credentials during its browsing sessions.

Amazon's objection was more about the agent's behavior than the shopping itself, as other personal agents like xAI's Grok Bot and OpenClaw also exhibit similar traits.

The dispute centered around Amazon's Conditions of Use, which require agents to identify themselves when accessing the site, rather than the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. This shift in legal ground was influenced by a recent Ninth Circuit ruling, which clarified that a user controlling an AI assistant is the party accessing Amazon's computers, not the assistant itself.

Amazon's enforcement of the block is through a pop-up message that appears when shoppers try to interact with Muse. Meanwhile, Shopify took a different approach just a day after Amazon's decision. On September 21, Shopify announced agentic checkout with Shop Pay across its stores, integrating Meta's Muse into its ecosystem. Muse reads product data and completes payments through a declared path, ensuring that merchants are aware of the agent's actions.

Each purchase also creates a single-use credential, preventing the exposure of card numbers to Muse.

The decision to either block or integrate Muse reflects the differing business models of Amazon and Shopify. Amazon's own storefront, recommendations, and assistant make outside agents competing for customer relationships unattractive, while Shopify, as a provider of infrastructure for merchants, benefits from additional agent channels that streamline transactions and strengthen its platform.
