Al Shara says Israeli aggression is undermining ‘rising’ Syria

On Wednesday, Syrian President Ahmad Al Shara criticized Israel for conducting numerous air strikes and incursions into Syrian territory, asserting that these actions were hindering Syria's progress and regional stability. Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr. Al Shara mentioned that over 500 air strikes, more than 1,200 incursions, and 300 detentions had occurred, posing a threat to security.

Initially, Israeli forces entered a UN-patrolled buffer zone post-Bashar Al Assad's regime collapse, which Israel claimed was a temporary measure to secure its border. However, Israel's actions have since expanded, with airstrikes on Syrian military infrastructure and territorial gains further into Syria. The Syrian government and the UN have condemned the deployment, citing a violation of Syrian sovereignty and a 1974 disengagement agreement.

Al Shara reiterated Syria's commitment to this agreement and demanded the Israeli forces withdraw to their positions as of December 8, 2024. He rejected Israeli attempts to "impose a fait accompli" and called for peace that respects the rights of all parties. Turning to Syria's recovery, Al Shara highlighted the end of the civil war, restoration of state institutions, weapons control, and the start of reconstruction.

He noted sanctions removal, resumption of production, increased agricultural output, and efforts against drug trafficking and human smuggling. Over 3.5 million refugees and internally displaced people have returned to Syria, and the country has vowed to end displacement through its "Syria without refugee camps" initiative. Universities and schools are under reconstruction to restore education, and Syria has reestablished diplomatic ties with the international community.

Al Shara also mentioned Syria's cooperation with international bodies like the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the International Atomic Energy Agency, stating that the country has transitioned from crisis to opportunity for many nations. The lifting of US sanctions paved the way for broader international cooperation, including with the European Union.

Finally, Al Shara pledged to continue rebuilding Syria and restoring its dignity, expressing the country's return and presentation of achievements at the 81st General Assembly with the aim of establishing strategic partnerships at the 82nd session.
