2027: ‘Nigerians may take over their country’ – Prof Utomi warns INEC over restrictions at polling units

Prof. Pat Utomi, a member of the Movement for Credible Elections, has warned that Nigerians may have to take over their country if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) refuses to allow voters to bring devices that could increase election transparency. Speaking on Arise News, Utomi criticized INEC for restricting technological equipment in polling stations, stating that such a decision would be criminal.

He argued that the United Kingdom and the United States do not have a clear understanding of their electoral commission chairpersons, as election results are monitored by the media.

Utomi advocated for the use of body cameras and live streaming from every polling booth in the country during elections. He expressed his desire to see politicians prosecuted for misusing public funds to run for office. Utomi emphasized that politicians often think public coffers are meant solely for campaign spending, and they find creative ways to prevent elections from being abused.

He pointed out that the presence of party agents at polling stations could lead to fraud, as voters may not be aware of their votes being counted accurately. Utomi suggested that opposition parties are currently collaborating to ensure voters are aware of their ability to have their votes count. He stated that if people realize their votes matter, the 300,000-strong Nigerian police force would not be enough to stop the people's will from being enacted.

Utomi criticized INEC for its statements regarding who has authority over what, and he urged Nigerians to become aware that they can share resources during elections. He emphasized that the election must be technologized, with body cams and live streaming from every polling booth in the country. If INEC refuses to implement these measures, Utomi warned that Nigerians may have to take over their country.
