Why is Georgia basketball coach Mike White wearing a sling as practices start?

Georgia basketball practices kicked off on Monday with head coach Mike White sidelined. The coach donned a sling on his right arm post-surgery for his rotator cuff, which he has been wearing for approximately five weeks. However, he anticipates regaining full mobility before the Bulldogs take on Georgia State in an exhibition game at Stegeman Coliseum on October 7.

White, a fifth-year coach who played guard at Ole Miss from 1995-99, quipped about his injury during a press conference on Tuesday, Sept. 22, attributing it to extensive throwing and illegal screens set during his playing days. The injury also caused strain on his left shoulder, resulting in discomfort that necessitates the use of the sling.

White joked about his plans to make a left-hand layup once his condition improves, a feat he couldn't accomplish as a player. Senior guard Blue Cain expressed his anticipation, noting that White has been in the sling "all year," indicating his eagerness for the coach's return. On the team's health, White highlighted freshman forward Hakeem Weeks, who has faced minor setbacks and plans to return shortly. Georgia's regular season commences on November 2 against North Carolina Central.
