The decision was made after both schools signed a document on March 12, obtained through an open records request. The games were initially set to take place on both campuses every year from 2029 to 2032, alternating years.

The agreement to cancel these games comes as a trend in college football, with high-profile teams avoiding scheduling other top-ranked opponents in the preseason. This move comes in an effort to avoid putting their postseason chances at risk, as a potential loss on the schedule could negatively impact their case for making the College Football Playoff.
