Ukrainian forces strike Russian oil refinery in Samara Oblast in overnight drone attack

On September 22, Ukrainian forces launched a drone strike against an oil refinery located in Samara Oblast, Russia. The Kuibyshev oil refinery, situated along the Volga River, approximately 475 miles from Ukraine's border, is capable of producing up to 10,000 metric tons of oil daily, equivalent to 73,000 barrels. The plant processes around 3.7 million tons of oil annually and supplies fuel products utilized by Russia's military-industrial sector and armed forces.

Eyewitness footage captured by Ukrainian monitoring channels Exilenova+ and Supernova+ shows the aftermath of the attack, with a massive fireball illuminating the night sky, and later videos depict smoke billowing from the plant and raging fires. Russian opposition news channel ASTRA released an analysis suggesting the Kuibyshev oil refinery was indeed targeted by Ukrainian drones. The Samara plant has faced several Ukrainian strikes previously, with operations suspended on June 10, 2023.

Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries have significantly impacted the country's oil production, contributing to nationwide fuel shortages and reducing refinery output throughout the summer. In September, half of Russia's six largest diesel-producing refineries halted or reduced output following Ukrainian drone strikes. The attacks have also raised concerns in the United States, with President Donald Trump urging Ukraine to cease targeting oil refineries, citing the impact on the global diesel supply amidst his war with Iran.

Zelensky has been urged to halt the strikes on oil refineries by Trump, as he believes the actions are causing a diesel fuel shortage worldwide.
