Takaichi arrives in New York to attend U.N. General Assembly

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi touched down in New York on Monday night, bound for a U.N. General Assembly session. Her flight had originated from Tokyo's Haneda Airport, arriving at the city's John F. Kennedy International Airport later that night. Takaichi plans to introduce Japan's strategy for economic and energy collaboration with Gulf nations, prompted by the Middle East's precarious situation.

The Japanese leader intends to emphasize Japan's resolve to spearhead supply chain enhancement, including energy, and to counteract technological advancements like artificial intelligence. This marks Japan's 70th year of UN membership, and Takaichi pledges continued backing for multilateralism at the General Assembly. Addressing global concerns, Takaichi will discuss Asia, Middle East, and Ukraine scenarios, committing to UN Security Council reform, disarmament, and nonproliferation, as well as climate change mitigation.

In anticipation of a U.S.-China summit, Takaichi aims to dissuade President Donald Trump from striking a deal without Japan. Discussions may also encompass U.S. sanctions on International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane and Japan's fiscal and monetary policies. Takaichi's itinerary includes meetings with U.S. President Trump, U.N.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and others, before her return to Japan on Thursday. Her original departure was set for 7 p.m. Japan time, but was delayed to 11 p.m. due to Typhoon Dujuan.
