UNGA: Tinubu sitting side by side with Trump wouldn’t make any difference – Pius Anyim

Former Senate President Pius Anyim has stated that President Bola Tinubu's decision not to attend the United Nations General Assembly alongside US President Donald Trump would have had no impact on the outcome of the event. Anyim argued that there would not have been any meaningful discussions or exchanges between the two leaders, as Trump's schedule had been set a year in advance.

He added that Tinubu's absence from the event should not be a concern, as Nigerians were already aware that their leader was currently on leave. Anyim further noted that Vice President Kashim Shettima was in charge of representing Nigeria at the UNGA and had been assigned the task. He questioned the hype surrounding Tinubu's absence, emphasizing that the President has the option to attend the General Assembly or not, as it is not mandatory.

Anyim explained that the UNGA consists of general assembly sessions and side meetings, with the main purpose being to read a statement from the country. He concluded that the absence of the President from the UNGA would not pose any significant problem, as long as side meetings were not scheduled and he could not attend those specific sessions.
