Osun Assembly backs constitutional amendment for state police

The Osun State House of Assembly convened to deliberate on a constitutional amendment Bill on Tuesday, aiming to establish State Police Services throughout Nigeria. The proposal was forwarded by the National Assembly as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process. Speaker Adewale Egbedun informed lawmakers that the Bill had been transmitted to each State House of Assembly for consideration and approval, emphasizing the necessity of legislative participation in advancing the constitutional amendment process.

Lawmakers from various constituencies voiced their support for the proposed State Police Services, describing the proposal as timely. They argued that a state-based policing structure would provide a more localized security layer, closer to communities and residents across the nation. The lawmakers highlighted that the proposed amendment would strengthen the country's security architecture at the state and local government levels, enhancing the capacity of states to deploy security personnel effectively in response to local challenges.

They maintained that the establishment of State Police Services would improve the ability of states to provide adequate security and respond more effectively to security threats within their jurisdictions.

Following a heated debate, Majority Leader Babajide Kofoworola, representing Ede-North State Constituency, proposed a motion for the House to support the constitutional amendment. The motion was seconded by Tajudeen Adeyemi, representing Ifelodun State Constituency. Meanwhile, the Assembly adjourned to the Committee of the Whole to further consider amendments and corrections to the Osun State Park Management System Bill, 2026.
