Fergie Chambers faces Spanish court fight over US extradition request

Fergie Chambers, a prominent American activist and Gaza humanitarian donor, is facing a Spanish court battle over a US extradition request. The Spanish government's decision to allow the case to proceed to court, despite declining to block the US request at the preliminary stage, has drawn criticism. Government spokesperson Elma Saiz called the decision "purely procedural" and stated that the government had only conducted a formal examination of the request.

Chambers' legal team will now challenge the extradition in Spain's Audiencia Nacional, after which the government will make a final decision. Baltasar Garzon, Chambers' lead counsel, described the decision as "setting a dangerous precedent regarding the defence of the Palestinian cause." Garzon, a former Spanish judge who pursued Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, criticized Spain for not defending international law, the rights of Palestinians, and the protection of humanitarian aid providers while allowing the extradition to proceed.
