OPINION: It’ill get worse before it gets worse

Nigeria finds itself in a critical situation, with those tasked with caring for the nation appearing to prioritize their own desires over the well-being of the people. It has been 146 days since a new group of leaders assumed power in Abuja, yet the citizens have not experienced any relief. The situation resembles that of the Biblical Absalom, who promised his subjects that he would use the same methods of chastisement his father, King David, used.

Under the previous administration led by President Buhari, the nation suffered greatly, with citizens believing that no future government would be worse than Buhari's in terms of abuse of power, lack of empathy, disregard for the country's diversity and suffering of citizens, and intolerance of opposing views. However, recent events suggest that the new administration under President Tinubu may be even worse.

Appointments made by Tinubu have been seen as nepotistic, lacking in qualifications, and potentially a continuation of the provincialism that plagued Buhari's regime. The administration has already prepared a supplementary budget less than two months into the fiscal year, funds for which are being directed towards renovating the residences of the President and Vice President, purchasing SUVs for them and the First Lady, and procuring a luxury yacht.

These actions raise questions about the priorities and intentions of the Tinubu government, and whether they truly care for the well-being of the Nigerian people or are simply focused on their own gain.
