New Tamil Nadu dengue figures come up in public domain

Tamil Nadu has reported a third consecutive year of declining dengue cases, according to data released by the State Health and Family Welfare Department. As of September 19, 2026, the state recorded 17,049 cases, a 17% decrease from the 25,585 cases reported in 2025 and a 46% drop from the 46,971 cases in 2024. The 2026 figure, however, only includes data up to September 19 and cannot be directly compared with the full-year figures from previous years.

The number of dengue-related deaths also declined in 2026, with nine deaths reported up to that date, down from 12 in 2025, 13 in 2024, and 12 in 2023. Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, can cause high fever, body pain, and in severe cases, life-threatening complications. Symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, and extreme weakness necessitate immediate medical attention.

While the year-on-year decline in reported cases and deaths offers insight into Tamil Nadu's dengue burden, the data do not elucidate the reasons behind this trend. Continued surveillance and control measures against the Aedes mosquito, the primary transmitter of dengue, are crucial for preventing the virus.
