A man in Kelantan died after being tied to a tree and thrown into a river by his nephew, a week after being hospitalized for mental health issues, according to police in Kota Tinggi on Tuesday. (Photo: Bernama)

On the same day as the incident on Sunday, a warrant was issued by Judge Hafizah Abdul Rajak of the Kota Tinggi Sessions Court to investigate the crime under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which deals with murder, according to The Malaysian Reserve.

The suspect, who had been admitted to Kota Tinggi Hospital earlier, appeared at the court around 9 a.m. accompanied by police officers. Police Chief Yusof Othman reported that his officers had detained the suspect following a report received at 9:30 a.m.

The suspect is said to have thrown the victim into the river before attacking the victim's father, a 40-year-old man, with a parang (machete) and chasing him. A police officer also sustained injuries while attempting to apprehend the suspect. The motive and cause of the incident are still under investigation. The victim's body was sent to Pasir Gudang Hospital for autopsy.
