Iranian President heads to New York for diplomatic push at UN General Assembly

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has embarked on a diplomatic mission to New York, aiming to challenge the United States at the UN General Assembly. The conflict between Iran and the US has escalated, with Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels increasing their attacks. Pezeshkian is scheduled to speak at the General Assembly on Wednesday and engage in meetings with foreign leaders, Iranian expatriates, US experts, and think tank members.

Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, arrived in New York on Monday after holding talks with Qatari officials on regional developments. Araghchi emphasized Iran's intent to defend its interests and the legitimacy of the Iranian people on the international stage. Pezeshkian echoed these sentiments, asserting Iran's resolve to powerfully defend its positions and convey the Iranian people's message to the world despite hardships.

The diplomatic effort comes as the Houthi rebels have made significant gains in Yemen and intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia, including energy infrastructure and shipping. This has put pressure on Washington to support Riyadh. The United States reportedly had advanced military preparations, with target lists approved and aircraft loaded with weapons before President Donald Trump called off the strikes.

The Houthi escalation provides Iran with another regional pressure point as tensions persist between Washington and Tehran. Iran will also leverage the UN meetings to highlight perceived failures in the international system to uphold peace and security. The Iranian delegation's presence at the UN General Assembly has become a point of friction with the US, as Washington denied visas to several members of the Iranian delegation, including members of the president's communications team.

Iran has a comprehensive agenda, attending meetings with the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation, the Non-Aligned Movement, and a leaders' summit on the environment.
