Düsseldorf - Vonovia CEO Luka Mucic expressed skepticism on Thursday about the leftist party's plan to expropriate large property firms in Berlin following their electoral victory. "A recent post-election poll shows the absolute majority of Berliners oppose expropriating major private housing companies," Mucic told the Handelsblatt.

He called for more new builds, reliable frameworks, and cooperation, stating that "co-ownership doesn't create a single new apartment." The Left had advocated for the expropriation of large real estate firms in their campaign, citing a September 2021 popular vote which saw 58 percent of Berliners in favor of drafting a law to expropriate large property firms.

However, no such legislation has materialized so far. A post-election survey conducted by Infratest dimap on Sunday revealed that a majority of Berliners opposed expropriation and compensation for private housing companies. Fifty-one percent were against it, while 37 percent supported it. Mucic had earlier described his company's focus on the housing crisis in the capital as "part of the solution," noting that Vonovia was currently building around 1,000 new units and had built 6,000 since 2013.
