Ghana’s maternal mortality rate three times above SDG target – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has declared maternal and child health as the foremost challenge for the Accra Reset, stating that the initiative must deliver concrete improvements in the lives of mothers and children. Health was chosen as the initial focus for the global reset due to its significance to human dignity and the ongoing difficulties experienced by countries in the Global South.

Mahama emphasized that health is a person's most valuable asset, which is why they selected maternal and child health as the initial battleground for this worldwide effort.

During his remarks in New York, Mahama highlighted that nearly seven out of every ten maternal deaths worldwide occur in Sub-Saharan Africa. He also pointed out that Ghana's maternal mortality rate remains three times higher than the Sustainable Development Goal target. To address these issues, Mahama introduced the Mother Africa initiative and the Business United for Mothers, Babies and Youth (BUMBY) campaign.

He described these initiatives as opportunities to combine public policy with corporate responsibility, stating that they would serve as a means to test the proposed financial and governance structure in real time.
