Costa: EU Can Do Far More With Canada Than Just Trade

European Council President António Costa expressed the European Union's desire to deepen its relationship with Canada. Costa stated that the EU seeks to cooperate closely with Canada, emphasizing the potential for extensive collaboration. When questioned about the proposal of associate membership for Canada, Costa clarified that it aims for a stronger partnership and closer cooperation.

Despite this, Costa noted that a significant challenge remains: Canada's geographical location outside Europe, preventing it from applying for EU membership. Costa stressed that the EU can achieve far more with Canada than mere trade. He outlined areas for cooperation, including defense and security, investment in artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and addressing new technological challenges.

Costa also highlighted the importance of strengthening democracy, noting that the EU and Canada share similar values and are reliable partners. Costa anticipated the EU-Canada summit in Montreal on October 29-30 as a crucial moment to define the future of their relationship. Previously, on September 16, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her intention to explore the possibility of Canada becoming the EU's first associate member, a proposal welcomed by Prime Minister Mark Carney but not directly endorsed.

Following this, US President Donald Trump had threatened to impose significant tariffs on the EU if Canada were to become an associate member.
