Blue Jays center fielder Brett Bateman injured while making sliding catch against Orioles

Toronto's final attempt for a playoff berth faced significant obstacles as they suffered a setback with the injury of rookie outfielder Brett Bateman. The Blue Jays were already grappling with health issues affecting key players Dylan Cease and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. On Monday night, Bateman was hurt during a sliding catch in the second inning.

Although he managed to secure the ball and retire Baltimore's Rece Hinds, his slide caused him to slide into the ground unevenly, resulting in a noticeable divot. Bateman rolled over awkwardly after the catch and walked off the field slowly, eventually being replaced the next time Toronto took the field. The Blue Jays were three games behind the Chicago White Sox for the final wild card in the American League heading into the day.

Guerrero was absent due to back problems, while starting pitcher Trey Yesavage was limited to two innings in his return from knee inflammation. Cease, who has dealt with shoulder issues, remains uncertain about his availability for future starts this season. Bateman, acquired by Toronto in an August trade that sent Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs, had posted a .320 batting average in 38 games since making his major league debut for the Blue Jays on August 7th.
