Bill Gates pushes for ’smart use’ of AI as his foundation builds more representative language data

Bill Gates addressed his foundation's Goalkeepers gathering, suggesting that "increased generosity" and "the smart use of AI" could accelerate the fight against inequality. He urged wealthy nations to expand international aid and apply artificial intelligence towards "lifesaving innovations," while acknowledging that his foundation had "failed to build in the right human values and ways of keeping our moral code controlling what these AIs do."

The Gates Foundation's annual event opened with a reminder that 26 of the world's 34 wealthiest nations decreased development aid to poorer countries last year. Despite this, the foundation highlighted numerous educators, farmers, and health workers using AI to address learning gaps, pest infestations, and improve patient medical records.

To promote more equitable access to AI, the Gates Foundation announced a coalition of 60 organizations, including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI Foundation, working to expand AI tools in underrepresented languages. This coalition aims to reach over 3 billion people within five years by coordinating existing efforts. The foundation's CEO, Mark Suzman, emphasized the urgency of these endeavors, stating that even if AI development were to slow, the foundation would continue working on language sets and making them usable.

This initiative builds upon the foundation's recent $1 billion commitment towards AI-focused efforts to improve health outcomes, educational tools, and assist small farmers worldwide. The coalition's work to overcome the issue of unrepresentative language data, which could lead to mistranslations and inaccuracies in AI models, has been highlighted as crucial in ensuring AI tools benefit poor communities currently "shut out" from the technology.
