Gates Foundation launches coalition to build more representative language data sets for AI

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is bringing together Anthropic, Google, OpenAI Foundation, and numerous other entities to develop more inclusive language data sets for artificial intelligence. The coalition, which includes 60 partners, aims to expand AI tools that can serve over 3 billion people within five years. The goal is to coordinate existing efforts and make language data more accessible, particularly in underrepresented languages.

This initiative stems from a recent Gates Foundation report that highlighted the need for better language data to combat global inequality. The foundation also pledged $1 billion toward AI-focused efforts to enhance health outcomes, upgrade educational tools, and assist small farmers worldwide. The coalition's formation comes as some of the largest AI companies call for a slowdown in advanced model development, even as governments grapple with issues like cybersecurity and children's development.
