Anambra dares Obi to quit presidential race, releases salary arrears document

The Anambra State Government has challenged former Governor Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, alleging he broke key campaign promises on debt and timely payment of workers' salaries. In a statement on X, the government asked, "When will Peter Obi quit presidential campaign?" They recalled that Obi had promised to quit if proven in debt and to resign as governor if workers were not paid on time.

They claim he left office with higher arrears. The government attached a letter from Chief of Staff Chuks Iloegbunam, dated April 25, 2006, which made a special appeal for Obi to settle salary arrears owed to the Anambra State Water Corporation. The corporation's monthly salary bill stood at about N15m, with workers last paid in February.

The letter referenced Obi's campaign manifesto, which pledged to resign if there were unpaid worker salaries. The state government further alleged Obi left outstanding external loans and salary, pension, and gratuity arrears.
