Anambra Govt dares Peter Obi to quit presidential race, releases salary arrears document [PHOTO]

The Anambra State Government has challenged presidential candidate Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race. In a statement posted on the state's official X account, the government accused Obi of breaking key campaign promises regarding debt and timely payments of workers' salaries.

This comes after Obi had vowed to withdraw from the race if proven he left Anambra in debt and pledged to resign as governor if workers' salaries were not paid on time. The government claims Obi broke both promises, leaving office in 2014 with increased arrears. Accompanying the statement was a letter dated April 25, 2006, supposedly signed by Chuks Iloegbunam, Obi's Chief of Staff at the time.

The letter, titled "Gubernatorial Prerogative," made a special appeal to Obi to settle salary arrears owed to workers of the Anambra State Water Corporation. The Water Corporation's monthly salary bill was about N15 million, and workers had not been paid since February. The letter urged Obi to include the Water Corporation in the list of government parastatals paid through subventions, thereby avoiding frequent visits from workers seeking salary payments.
