US treasury chief says Iranian airlines to be ‘shut down’ Sept 23

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on September 23 that Iranian airlines will face difficulties operating globally due to American sanctions, as the Trump administration aims to exert pressure on Tehran. Bessent stated that on that date, all Iranian airlines will be effectively shut down worldwide, citing a range of restrictions such as fuel provision, landing services, ticket sales, and involvement in the dollar system.

The ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, which began late February with a joint US-Israeli strike against Iranian leaders, has intensified the situation. In response, the US imposed sanctions on all remaining Iranian airlines, while also targeting entities supporting Iran's aviation industry, including those based outside the country.

Earlier, Bessent had vowed to declare an "economic D-Day" on Iran, emphasizing the administration's commitment to financially choking the country. The remarks followed a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, arranged to prepare for Trump's summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. China, a significant economic partner and ally of Iran, was present at the talks.

Iran's aviation sector has historically faced sanctions, limiting its access to aircraft, spare parts, and maintenance services.
