US treasury chief says Iranian airlines to be ‘shut down’ Sept 23

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Monday that Iranian airlines will face significant difficulties operating globally within two days due to American sanctions. According to Bessent, an interview with CNBC revealed that all Iranian airlines will be shut down worldwide on September 23. He explained that airlines would be unable to receive fuel, landing services, or sell tickets, effectively cutting them from the dollar system.

The conflict between the US and Iran began on February 28, when US-Israeli strikes targeted Iranian officials, leading to a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has caused a surge in global oil prices. This month, the US imposed sanctions on all remaining Iranian airlines that had not yet faced penalties. Bessent also addressed targets supporting Iran's aviation sector, including firms outside Iran.

His comments followed a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, where discussions focused on economic matters ahead of President Trump's summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday. China is one of Iran's major economic partners and a strong diplomatic supporter. The aviation sector in Iran has been struggling with sanctions, which have hindered its ability to acquire aircraft, spare parts, and maintenance services.
