US News Outlets Sue Trump over White House Ban

Three prominent US news organizations - CNN, MS NOW, and Politico - have announced plans to sue Donald Trump's administration over his ban from the White House, according to a statement released on Monday. In the statement, the three media outlets affirmed their commitment to uphold their First Amendment rights and defended the principle that the government cannot dictate what the press reports or publishes.

The lawsuit emerged after Trump accused the media of reporting "fiction" and "lying" in their coverage of his administration. In a series of tweets and social media posts, Trump claimed that his administration was not targeting the Free Press but was "instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS."

This latest escalation in the ongoing feud between President Trump and various US media outlets follows his derogatory remarks about the press in 2017, when he referred to them as the "enemy of the American people." On the day following the administration's announcement, the entry badges of reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico were disabled by the White House.

The news organizations accused the White House of revoking their journalists' credentials without adequate notice or process due to the administration's objection to their reporting.

The lawsuit contends that the Constitution does not permit a president or any other government official to strip the press of its First Amendment rights and liberty and property interests without appropriate notice or process based solely on the president's personal disapproval of the press's content. CNN, along with ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC, forms the White House television pool, a group that shares the costs of covering the president, rotates organizing coverage, and shares footage with other outlets across the country.

In response to CNN's exclusion from the pool, other major TV networks suspended their coverage, effectively eliminating a crucial video source for White House events. As a result, CNN was unable to provide a pool feed for Trump's trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly on Monday. Bryan Boughton, chair of the Fox News TV pool and Washington bureau chief, announced the suspension in an email, stating that no replacement pool would be set up.

The absence of a replacement pool effectively resulted in a boycott over the ban. In a joint statement, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox, and NBC emphasized the importance of the public having access to accurate, independent information about its government and affirmed that no administration should restrict a news organization based on the administration's disagreement with its reporting.
