Benue suspends Muslim pilgrims board chairman, secretary

The Benue State Executive Council has decided to suspend the Chairman and the Secretary of the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board for three months starting from Monday, September 21, 2026. The officials involved are Alhaji Abubakar Adamu, the Chairman, and Alhaji Ahmadu Alhassan, the Executive Secretary. This decision came after petitions were made, alleging misuse of Hajj slot allocations, mismanagement of funds, and irregularities in the distribution of government palliatives.

If proven true, these allegations could be considered serious misconduct, contradicting the principles of public service, accountability, transparency, and probity. The suspensions were imposed to allow for a comprehensive investigation, ensuring that no interference occurs with the facts of the case. The Executive Council has appointed Hon.

Ahmed Tijani Adamu Esq. as Acting Chairman and Mr. Adamu Salihu Babi as Acting Executive Secretary to maintain continuity in the Board's operations. Upon taking over, the suspended officials are required to immediately transfer all properties in their possession to the respective acting officers. The Benue State Government, led by His Excellency, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, reaffirms its dedication to transparency, accountability, and the prudent management of public resources, especially those related to the welfare of intending pilgrims from the state.
