Trump inaugurates new White House helipad, but networks skip coverage during First Amendment fight

On Monday, President Donald Trump unveiled a new helipad at the White House, while avoiding questions about a First Amendment controversy. The event took place despite major television networks withholding coverage, as CNN was barred from reporting on the ceremony. Trump showcased his new helicopter landing pad by cutting a red, white and blue ribbon and exchanging handshakes with officials clad in green construction smocks and hardhats.

The new helipad features granite flooring with a lifespan of over a million years and a large insignia bearing the "Seal of the President of the United States." Trump boasted about the impressive features being a necessary upgrade due to modern Marine One helicopters, which are too powerful to land on the existing lawn without causing damage.

However, the helipad project has become a source of controversy as four major television networks - ABC, CBS, CNN and Fox News - collectively skipped the event. This decision comes after CNN was banned from covering the White House, marking a significant escalation in Trump's ongoing efforts to limit media access. The networks' decision highlights the ongoing tension between the administration's desire for control over media coverage and the First Amendment's protection of press freedom.

The helipad's construction began in June, with the president claiming that the granite's durability would make it a lasting addition to the White House. However, Trump's track record of overestimating the longevity of his projects has raised doubts about the helipad's durability. The project started at an estimated cost of up to $6 million, but the true expense remains unclear due to the addition of various enhancements, such as leveling the surrounding ground.
