Unification minister calls for fresh start in dialogue with N. Korea during meeting with ex-U.S. envoy

Seoul, September 21 (Yonhap) -- Unification Minister Chung Dong-young urged for a fresh approach in inter-Korean relations during a meeting with former U.S. envoy Stephen Biegun on Monday. The minister emphasized the need to move forward in dialogue with North Korea, citing the deterioration of the historic Singapore agreement and the severance of relations due to hostility.

In the past seven years, North Korea's nuclear capabilities have grown, while inter-Korean ties have been completely severed by tension and confrontation. Chung believes that political decisions by former U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un could pave the way for progress. The former administration's interest in reengaging with North Korea has sparked speculation about a potential revival of the personal diplomacy that led to three summits between Trump and Kim.

Chung expressed optimism about a new beginning on the Korean Peninsula this fall. Biegun, who is in South Korea on a private visit, expects further discussions with Chung and highlighted the central role South Korea should play in any renewed diplomatic efforts. The U.S. ambassador to South Korea, Michelle Steel, also expressed confidence in the administration's support.

During a conference in Incheon, Biegun suggested that Trump could propose a meeting with Kim after the APEC summit in China in November, potentially in Pyongyang.
