UAE calls for stronger protection of global supply chains to safeguard food security

UAE Minister of State, Khalifa Al Marar, has called for enhanced protection of global supply chains to mitigate the risk of pushing tens of millions into acute food insecurity, with significant repercussions for the global economy. Delivering remarks at an Arria Formula meeting on September 17, during the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York, Al Marar emphasized the critical importance of securing supply chains, trade routes, and energy flows for maintaining international peace and stability.

According to Al Marar, disruptions to these networks have a direct impact on food security and the essential supply of fertilizers crucial to global agriculture. He cited estimates from the World Food Programme, suggesting that persistent disruptions could elevate the number of people facing acute food insecurity to 45 million, with the Global South shouldering a disproportionate share of the consequences.

Drawing on international law, Al Marar invoked the Law of the Sea and principles of state sovereignty, cautioning that the failure to safeguard trade and energy supply chains would "undermine the rules and principles underpinning international law and the established norms governing relations between states." The minister concluded by reaffirming the UAE's dedication to efforts aimed at easing tensions, de-escalating conflicts, and promoting regional stability.

The meeting, chaired by Dr Abdullatif Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain, took place ahead of the General Debate of the 81st General Assembly session.
