Trump to press Zelenskyy on energy ceasefire amid soaring diesel prices

Donald Trump plans to discuss an energy ceasefire with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting this week at the United Nations high-level week. Global diesel prices have risen sharply due to conflicts in Iran and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine intensified its attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure over the weekend, targeting a major Moscow oil refinery and resulting in three deaths.

On September 21, Trump claimed the world is suffering from an energy shortage caused by the war in Ukraine, stating that Russia's diesel oil industry has been crippled due to the conflict. He urged an end to the war, emphasizing that 25,000 people, mostly soldiers, are killed each month. Zelenskyy mentioned ongoing negotiations and the need to protect Ukraine's energy sector, critical infrastructure, and food exports from Russian targeting.

During their meeting, Trump is expected to call on Zelenskyy to stop damaging Russian diesel fuel, as soaring diesel prices in the US have reached a record $6.50 per gallon, up from $3.19 per gallon a year earlier. Trump is anticipated to deliver a UN address on Tuesday and meet with key energy producers like the Gulf Cooperation Council and Venezuela's new leader, Delcy Rodriguez.
