The Tragedy of Nikole Hannah-Jones

Nikole Hannah-Jones made the decision to enroll her child at a predominantly black and lower-income public school in New York City, only to later reveal that her child felt she shouldn't have been used as political fodder. The essay exposes the harsh realities of her personal choices and the impact on her child. While Hannah-Jones is courageous for sharing her mistakes, the larger narrative she presents is largely inaccurate.

Her essay fails to acknowledge that the real issue is management and accountability, not the lack of resources. In New York City, schools serving lower-income students receive more funding per student than the national average, with PS 307, the school Hannah-Jones initially chose, being funded at $52,000 per student.

Despite her daughter Najya performing well in math, she struggled with standardized tests. This discrepancy led Hannah-Jones to believe that standardized tests were biased, rather than recognizing the gaps in her daughter's education. When Najya demanded a change in schools, the truth became apparent: she knew very little algebra and lacked foundational math skills.

This confrontation resulted in a decline in Najya's confidence, increased anxiety around tests, and behavioral issues at school. Hannah-Jones, a politically connected and outspoken individual, hoped to provide a better education for her child and others in the school. However, her efforts ultimately led to a poor educational experience for Najya and served as a cautionary tale about the limitations of voice without the threat of exit.
