The phone comes with a 5,567mAh battery in eSIM-only versions and a 5,391mAh battery in models with a physical SIM card slot, both exceeding 20 watt-hours (Wh). Various countries classify devices with a single-cell battery larger than 20Wh as dangerous goods, prohibiting them from being sent through standard consumer mail services like USPS standard post and Royal Mail.

Apple has devised a solution called 'Prepare to Ship,' a mode that uses battery firmware to limit the capacity to under 20Wh during shipping. This temporary mode activates from when the device is manufactured until the first activation by the customer, automatically removing the limit afterward, thus bypassing shipping restrictions while preserving the full battery capacity.

However, prior to shipping, users must manually enable 'Prepare to Ship' mode through the 'Settings' app, which can take from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the battery capacity. Users should unplug their phone before enabling this mode and note that it may become warmer during the process. The mode reduces the battery to under 80% capacity for 14 days before expiration.
