The American security presence in the Middle East is unraveling, with recent events highlighting its inability to safeguard key locations. The fall of the Yemeni port city of Mocha to the Houthis marks a significant shift in regional power dynamics. This seizure of Mocha grants the Houthi movement control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical waterway connecting the Indian and Red Seas.

Compounding this geopolitical crisis, an Iranian drone strike forced Saudi Arabia to suspend its vital East-West oil pipeline. This pipeline, stretching 1,200 kilometers across deserts, was constructed to bypass the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint where Iran has historically exerted control over shipping lanes. The pipeline enables Saudi Arabia to transport crude oil without navigating through the Strait of Hormuz, thus sidestepping Iranian naval capabilities.

The attack on the pipeline underscores how Iran's actions are pressuring both exits of the Arabian Peninsula. The Houthis now threaten shipping around the Bab el-Mandeb, while Iranian-backed militias operating from Iraq have attacked Saudi oil infrastructure. A Pentagon inspector general report confirmed that Iranian strikes caused damage or destruction to hundreds of structures at US bases across eight countries, along with dozens of aircraft.
