South Korea’s Lee to attend UN General Assembly, visit Mexico

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to attend the UN General Assembly and visit Mexico from September 21 to 27, according to the presidential Blue House. The visit aims to foster cooperation in various sectors, including trade, energy, aerospace, and culture.

During his stay, Lee will hold a summit with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, as well as meetings with other world leaders on the sidelines of the UN gathering. This includes a potential encounter with US President Donald Trump, as South Korea and the United States negotiate details of a $350 billion investment package under a recently signed trade deal.

At the UN General Assembly, Lee is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech on Tuesday, focusing on UN reform and outlining his vision for peace and coexistence on the Korean Peninsula. He will also meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Lee's Mexico City visit begins on Wednesday, followed by a summit with Sheinbaum the next day. Post-summit, the leaders will participate in a joint press conference and sign memorandums of understanding. South Korea is seeking to strengthen trade ties, energy collaboration, aerospace partnerships, and cultural exchanges with Mexico, which is the country's largest market for K-pop. Additionally, Seoul sees potential opportunities for expanding defense cooperation as Mexico modernizes its military forces.
