Saudi foreign minister attends GCC meeting ahead of UN General Assembly

The Taoiseach and key Irish ministers are set to travel to New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week. This annual event brings together world leaders amidst ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as discussions about the United Nations' future role. Ireland's delegation includes Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee, Climate, Environment and Energy Minister Darragh O'Brien, and Minister of State Timmy Dooley.

The week's opening ceremony is scheduled for the following day, focusing on the theme "Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all." Ireland assumes a prominent role in this assembly, as it currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Taoiseach Micheál Martin will address the UN on Thursday evening with Ireland's national statement.

Foreign Minister McEntee has emphasized her commitment to addressing the Middle East, Ukraine, and the future of the UN system. She is scheduled to co-host an event with the Malala Fund on Afghanistan, highlighting the plight of Afghan women and girls. Additionally, she is expected to participate in business and trade meetings during the week.

Minister Richmond's agenda will center on Ireland's dedication to international development and humanitarian efforts, which are crucial amid the strain on the aid system. He aims to convey the importance of global collaboration to ensure the UN's development system remains effective and relevant in addressing contemporary challenges.
