South Korea’s Lee to attend UN General Assembly, visit Mexico

President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea is set to travel to Mexico City on Wednesday, as part of efforts to strengthen ties with the US and Mexico. The trip, scheduled for September 21 to 27, will see the South Korean leader attend the United Nations General Assembly and meet with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

During his visit, Lee aims to explore potential cooperation in various sectors, including trade, energy, aerospace, and culture. Mexico, in particular, is of interest to South Korea due to its status as the largest market for K-pop and the opportunities for expanding defense cooperation as the country modernizes its military.

In addition to his official engagements, President Lee hopes to secure a meeting with US President Donald Trump, as both nations continue negotiations on a $350 billion trade deal. South Korean officials have confirmed that discussions on the package are ongoing, although a parliamentary briefing scheduled for last week has been postponed.

At the UN General Assembly, Lee is expected to deliver a keynote speech on Tuesday, focusing on UN reform and his vision for peace and coexistence on the Korean Peninsula. He will also hold a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Following the summit with Mexico, Lee and Sheinbaum are planned to have a joint press conference and sign memorandums of understanding.
