Just days before the planned summit between US President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping, officials from both economic giants discussed their trade dispute and security risks associated with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in New York. The Chinese proposed a mechanism to ensure the safe exchange of crucial information for AI development, said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

"We want a common vision regarding shared goals and shared threats," he added. Bessent did not provide further details, only mentioning a "very successful" meeting with China's Vice Premier He Lifeng. The US had indicated openness to talks on how to avoid AI-related dangers before the New York meeting. The discussions also covered the proposed US-China Trade Board, according to Bessent.

The talks took place in JPMorgan Chase's New York headquarters. According to US Trade Representative Jamie Johnson Greer, they were intended to lay the groundwork for a successful summit between Xi and Trump on Thursday. Chinese sources remain tight-lipped and only briefly announced Xi's arrival in Washington on Wednesday. China's side is keeping details under wraps until shortly before the visit.

Greer stated that the US government would monitor the implementation of recent commitments and advocate for "balanced trade." Trump has long been frustrated by China's exports to the United States far outpacing imports. Another topic for both sides is likely to be the extension of the current trade truce, which expires on November 10.

China has not fully implemented its promise to ease supplies of critical minerals, a senior US official criticized. Chinese officials said both sides would be guided by the "important consensus" between the two leaders and advise on economic and trade matters. Specific topics at the leaders' summit are not specified. China's relations with Russia and Taiwan could also be discussed during the summit.
