Sadiq Khan’s plan for London housing is detached from reality

Sadiq Khan's draft London plan falls short of addressing the housing and infrastructure needs of the city, argues Thomas Turrell. The mayor seems to be detached from reality, much like Thanos wielding the Reality Stone in "Avengers: Infinity War," according to Turrell. The draft plan aims to deliver 88% of new builds as one or two-bed flats, claiming there is a surplus of family homes in the private sector and that 11.1% of London homes are overcrowded.

However, only three% of homes built through affordable housing programs have four bedrooms or more. The plan's approach to parking and the Green Belt is inconsistent, and it fails to set out specific policies to promote brownfield development. The London Plan, being a legally binding document, will bind London authorities for at least a decade, making it crucial that it reflects reality rather than attempting to rewrite it.
