The German Federal Ministry of Labor is considering raising the retirement age for specific birth cohorts as part of a broader rent reform, according to a media report. The draft proposal, dated August 21, suggests that the retirement age would only increase for those born in 1968 and later, maintaining the current 67-year threshold for those born between 1965 and 1967. However, the ministry clarified that this was an outdated draft, and a new draft was being worked on.

The report also highlights a potential grace period for individuals who have already entered into an age-limit employment contract or are about to do so. Those born between 1968 and 1971, who have negotiated age-limit employment, would retain a 67-year retirement age and could still claim a fully unrestricted pension after 45 years of contributions at the age of 65. This arrangement could incentivize early negotiations for age-limit employment agreements.

The plan includes a grace period of up to five years for those who cannot work due to health reasons or have permanently left the workforce, deviating from the Rentenkommission's recommendation to abolish the fully unrestricted pension after 45 years of contributions. The proposed changes aim to protect the pension fund and prevent a significant impact on the labor market from the retiring "boomer" generation.
