Raging wildfire threatens Villa de Leyva, authorities investigate suspected arson

A massive wildfire continues to burn above the historic Colombian town of Villa de Leyva, with strong winds making it difficult to contain the flames. Authorities are investigating possible arson as the fire has affected nearly 300 hectares of vegetation and moved towards populated areas and surrounding mountains. The fire, which began on Saturday afternoon near the San Marcos mountain, is currently 50% controlled, though several active fronts remain.

Four helicopters have been deployed in the aerial operation, conducting around 170 water drops over the affected areas. The incident has prompted the evacuation of several homes and hotels, and classes have been suspended across the municipality. The Colombian government has pledged to deploy resources to contain the emergency, while the national and municipal authorities are urging residents and visitors to follow evacuation orders and safety instructions.
