Nkrumah’s policies should inform Ghana’s development — UG African Studies Director

Prof. Samuel Ntewusu, Director of African Studies at the University of Ghana, has urged a thorough analysis of Kwame Nkrumah's policies to glean insights for Ghana's ongoing development challenges. Ntewusu emphasized that the 117th anniversary of Nkrumah's birthday should transcend mere celebratory events and instead foster a critical examination of his ideas' relevance to national and continental progress.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency ahead of Founder’s Day, Ntewusu urged Ghanaians and Pan-Africans worldwide to scrutinize Nkrumah's policies, not confined to political biases or partisan disputes. He underscored that Nkrumah's role in Ghana's independence was pivotal, stating that while various figures played a part in the struggle, Nkrumah's strategies were instrumental in securing Ghana's freedom on March 6, 1957.

Ntewusu stressed that while Nkrumah's contributions to education, economic independence, urbanization, agriculture, and energy offer valuable lessons, his vision of African unity and liberation must also be revisited in the context of contemporary Africa. He advocated for a comprehensive reflection on Nkrumah's ideas, encompassing political, cultural, and economic liberation, to inform the country's and Africa's betterment.

As Ghanaians and Africans globally mark Nkrumah's 117th birthday, Founder’s Day, recognized as a public holiday following Parliament’s reaffirmation of September 21 as Founder’s Day in 2025, Ntewusu's call for a critical reevaluation of Nkrumah's legacy is timely and vital.
