Lee to Attend UN General Assembly, Make State Visit to Mexico

President Lee Jae Myung will embark on a two-nation journey this week, beginning with a visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York and concluding with a state visit to Mexico, according to a presidential official. During his tenure at the U.N. High-Level Week, Lee aims to engage with U.S. President Donald Trump and other world leaders to promote peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula and discuss potential reforms to the U.N. to address global challenges, as stated by National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac.

At the United Nations session on Tuesday, Lee plans to deliver a speech proposing solutions to tackle global issues and highlight South Korea's role and contributions, according to the official. He will also seek contact with U.S. President Trump and hold discussions with heads of state from various countries, including Australia, to foster close exchanges and explore avenues for national interest expansion.

Lee's New York itinerary includes a meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to advocate for the world body's role in maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula, as well as participation in an investment event featuring economic and financial figures from both South Korea and the United States. These engagements aim to showcase South Korea's global impact and garner international support for its peaceful coexistence policy, according to Wi Sung-lac.

Upon returning from the U.S., Lee will proceed to Mexico, where he will assume a state visit starting Wednesday. The two leaders will engage in summit talks, a luncheon, and a joint press conference, with the primary objective of strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, and supply chains. Mexico is South Korea's largest trading partner in Central and South America, with over 560 South Korean companies operating in the country, and a crucial gateway for South Korean firms seeking to expand into North America, as noted by Wi.

During the Mexico summit, Lee and Sheinbaum will deliberate on enhancing bilateral trade and investment, bolstering institutional support for South Korean firms operating in Mexico, and exploring cooperation in energy, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, digital technology, aerospace, and defense manufacturing. The state visit is set to conclude on Saturday, allowing Lee to return home the following day.
