‘Insufficient knowledge’: Allahabad High Court asks UP to use tech in criminal cases

The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to enhance the use of technology in criminal justice, citing instances where inadequate knowledge of forensic science hindered proper court assistance. The court ordered the implementation of technology, including electronic access to chargesheets, medico-legal reports, and forensic material.

Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal also mandated forensic science workshops for law officers, police, and judicial officers. The court emphasized that technological integration can improve the criminal justice system's functioning, particularly through electronic access to case diaries, chargesheets, and forensic reports. The electronic verification of bail sureties and the accessibility of case diaries were piloted at Tilhar police station, with the court permitting its statewide implementation.
